UV-Resistant UL1007 PVC 20AWG Cable: Specification and Applications

UL1007 20AWG is one of the most-specified hook-up wires in electronics: an appliance wiring style with defined construction, ratings and test requirements — and a workhorse for internal wiring, point-to-point connections and small harnesses. The UV-resistant variant extends it outdoors. This guide explains the specification and what the UV qualification changes.

What UL1007 Actually Specifies

UL1007 is a UL style number under the appliance wiring material (AWM) system — a complete specification, not just a size: conductor: 20AWG tinned or bare copper, stranded class per the style's stranding requirement; insulation: PVC, nominal wall thickness per style; temperature rating: 80°C class (the 1007 style's rating — its 1015 cousin raises it to 105°C); voltage rating: 300V; flame rating: VW-1 vertical-flame class typical. The style system means buyers get a verified package: any UL1007 wire, from any qualified mill, meets the same test-backed requirements — the compliance value our UL flame guide covers.

The 20AWG Class in Practice

20AWG (~0.5mm²) carries roughly 3-5A in practical chassis service (ampacity depends on bundling and ventilation — derate in bundles per our crimp-adjacent thermal guidance): signal wiring, low-power feeds, relay and indicator circuits, LED-adjacent power at short runs, and the general internal wiring of equipment. Fine stranding (the style's stranding class) gives it adequate flex life for serviceable connections; tinned conductors resist corrosion at solder and high-humidity environments.

What UV-Resistance Adds

Standard UL1007 PVC is an indoor wire: PVC embrittles under UV (photo-oxidation — our solar cable guide details the mechanism), so outdoor exposure cracks insulation within seasons. UV-resistant UL1007 variants use PVC compounds with UV stabilizer packages (carbon black or chemical stabilizers) — rated for outdoor service while keeping the style's electrical package. The honest boundaries: UV-rated PVC extends life outdoors substantially but doesn't match dedicated outdoor constructions (XLPO-class solar/industrial jackets) in decade-scale exposure — the selection matches the exposure class and service-life expectation.

Applications

  • Internal equipment wiring: the classic UL1007 role — point-to-point, harness leads, panel wiring.
  • Appliance and consumer products: the AWM system's home territory.
  • Outdoor-adjacent equipment: with UV-rated variants — signage, outdoor sensors, garden equipment, exterior-mounted devices where the wire sees daylight.
  • Small harness production: the standard wire for build-to-print equipment harnesses at signal and light-power levels.

Sourcing Notes

  • Style verification: the wire's legible UL style marking — the compliance trace.
  • Stranding and tinning per spec — substitution (CCA, different stranding) changes the performance package silently.
  • UV variant documentation: the stabilizer package's rating evidence for outdoor claims.
  • Color and printability for harness identification (our labeling guide covers marking practice).
