37-Pin IP68 Connector: Specifications, Applications and Harness Design

When equipment lives outdoors, underwater or in a washdown environment, the connector on the harness is usually the first point of failure. A 37-pin IP68 connector solves this by combining high pin density with a fully sealed body — but getting the promised protection level requires correct connector selection, cable matching and assembly technique. This guide covers what engineers should know before specifying one.

What IP68 Actually Guarantees

IP68 means the mated connector is dust-tight (6) and can withstand continuous immersion (8), typically specified by the manufacturer as 1 meter or more for a defined duration. Two details matter in practice. First, the rating applies to the mated pair — an unsealed cap on an unused receptacle destroys the protection. Second, the rating is only as good as the weakest point, which is usually the cable entry: a sealed connector body mated to a non-matching cable gland leaks at the gland. For background on protection classes in cable assemblies, our waterproof harness connector guide covers the sealing system end to end.

Why 37 Pins

Thirty-seven positions is a practical sweet spot for machines that consolidate many sensor and actuator circuits into one umbilical: enough pins to replace three or four smaller connectors, yet still serviceable with standard crimp tools. Typical uses include:

  • Robot arms and automated machinery umbilicals
  • Marine and subsea instrumentation
  • Solar trackers and outdoor LED signage
  • Vehicle-mounted surveillance and communication equipment

Because many pins share a small insert, signal circuits in a 37-pin connector are usually limited to low-current levels. Power circuits above a few amps per pin should be verified against the contact rating or moved to dedicated power contacts if the insert allows mixed contact sizes.

Cable Selection and Gland Matching

The harness cable must match both the electrical and mechanical requirements. Round jacketed cable with an outer diameter inside the gland's clamping range is essential; using foam-filled tape or heat-shrink to 'make up' the diameter is a short-term fix that fails in the field. For moving applications, a jacket material with good flex life (PUR or TPE) outlasts PVC by a wide margin. Shielded cable is recommended whenever the harness carries analog signals or runs near power electronics — the shield terminates at the backshell for 360-degree coverage.

Assembly Best Practices

Building a reliable IP68 harness is mostly about discipline:

  • Crimp contacts with calibrated tools and verify with pull-force samples
  • Set the O-ring and sealing surfaces clean and lubricated per the connector manufacturer's instructions
  • Torque the coupling nut and backshell to specification — both under- and over-torque cause leaks
  • Test the finished assembly, ideally with a pressure or vacuum check for critical programs

Kaweei builds sealed circular harnesses including mixed power/signal layouts and overmolded strain reliefs.
