6 AWG Wire FAQ: Ampacity, Applications and Equivalents

6 AWG is one of the most common heavy wire sizes in custom cable assemblies, battery interconnects and power distribution — and also one of the most asked about. This FAQ collects the practical answers: what it carries, what it equals in metric, and where it is the right (or wrong) choice.

How Many Amps Can 6 AWG Wire Carry?

There is no single number because ampacity depends on insulation temperature rating, bundling, ambient temperature and termination. Typical reference values for copper 6 AWG in free air:

  • 75°C insulation (e.g., THW, cross-linked PVC): roughly 65-75A
  • 90°C insulation (e.g., XLPE, silicone): roughly 75-95A
  • Battery and welding-grade flexible cable with high-temp jacket: up to ~100A with conservative derating in conduit

Inside a harness bundle, heat cannot escape as easily, so professional practice derates these numbers significantly. Our guide on how to choose the right wire gauge explains the derating factors in detail.

What Is 6 AWG in mm2?

6 AWG copper has a cross-section of approximately 13.3 mm². It sits between 12 mm² (close) and 16 mm² (the next common metric step up). If a drawing calls metric sizes, 16 mm² is usually specified when 6 AWG performance is needed with margin; 10 mm² would be undersized.

Stranding: Why It Matters for Harnesses

6 AWG is available in different stranding classes. Coarse stranding (Class B) is fine for fixed building wiring, but harnesses that flex, route through tight spaces or terminate on lugs in moving equipment use fine-stranded Class K or Class M rope-lay constructions. Fine stranding costs more per meter but dramatically improves flex life and makes crimp terminations more reliable, because the strands pack densely in the crimp barrel.

Where 6 AWG Is Typically Used

  • Battery-to-inverter and battery-to-contactor runs in mobile power systems
  • Solar charge controller to battery bank wiring
  • Welding secondary leads and ground straps
  • Sub-panel feeders and HVAC equipment power whips
  • Marine engine room power circuits (with tinned strands and oil-resistant jacket)

Can 6 AWG Handle a 60A Breaker?

With 75°C insulation installed per code tables, 6 AWG copper is commonly paired with 60A overcurrent protection. The deciding factors are termination temperature rating and installation method — always confirm against the applicable electrical code for your region and application, especially inside an enclosure where heat accumulates.
